The issue of the single payer insurance is that the reimbursement rates need to be of a realistic amount. The current reimbursement rates of Medicare and Medicaid barely cover the over head expenses especially in care provided by a smaller practitioner, thus forcing many private practitioners to not accept this type of insurance. The medical field is a business in this country; we must change our views on this. The reimbursements rate much be the in-between the Medicare standards and the private insurance. Having experienced both private insurance and no insurance it pains me to know how these charges and reimbursement vary depending on what is in your wallet.

Ryan wants to give seniors $8,000 to purchase private healthcare. News flash Mr. Ryan: disabled at 55, when my cobra coverage ran out last year I found it would cost $1,600 per month to maintain adequate coverage. Despite promises of low rates by insurance companies, the average healthy individual in their 30s pays $1,000 per month for coverage.
The math is just a joke!
And the crap about raising retirement ages in the future - this has already been done. My sister, now 66 - just became eligible for full social security benefits and medicare.
The retoric is always how government must cut spending just like families. The reality is when families find themselves with budget woes their first reaction is to raise income by getting a better or second job. We don't have a deficit problem - we have an income problem that must be solved through restoring sane tax policies. End the Bush tax cuts and impliment the Buffet rule now! If that's not enough do the math and restore the progressive tax amounts necessary.

Way to go, Missouri! As one who has loved ones living in Missouri, I hope Missouri will live up to its nickname as the "Show Me" state and indeed show the rest of us how a state that is not known as a bastion of liberal politics can consider the benefits of a single-payer system for its residents and do what's best for the businesses and the people of the state.

well. Perhaps these, Republicans? you said, need the right encouragement to help pass a bill. Polotics is not rocket science (though they try to complicate it enough). Someone should gently remind them that most of their supplies and materials that your people use comes from my country. Only a Universal Health System has the ability to provide affordable medications and supplies for everyone around your country. if a Capitalist System worked they would have no need to take soo much from our's.

It is like a Big Brother who can't afford his rent so he is living with us. But now he has a good Job but is unmotivated to work. Look man, you have to motivate yourself and MOVE OUT. Because I will tell ya, the freebies won't keep coming.

SO is it a universal Insurance legislation/ or is it an actual Universal Health Care system like it is everywhere else around the world, which we know works fully and without fail.
I must say though this is ,again, a huge step in the development of a great Health Care System for the united States. I myself have been keeping a close eye on the US national Health polocies for I would like to one day work in your health field. unfortionatly I can't work in a private setting. To fully activate a Universal Health System (hopefully paid through taxes) these would be a quick end to the Nursing shortage in your country...And no I am not the only one who thinks that way.

This is a Very exciting time for you I am sure.

Now if you would only be soo kind as to MAKE YOUR OWN MEDICATIONS AND STOP TAKING OUR's. For it appears this is another advantage of a government run Health system, affordable medications.

You Americans now have the know how and determination to stand on your own two feet. (sob)You're all grown up now aern't you...

I am an Australian and I am the product of a universal healthcare nation. My brother is 19 years old and if not for a government run healthcare he would have been dead 5 years ago.

Back in 2007 my brother started seeing double and having headaches. My parents beliving that he needed glasses booked an appointment for an optometrist for the same day(paid for by the Australian Government's Medicare). He attended the optometrist who noticed a problem and immediately referred to an Opthamologist (paid for by the Australian Govenment's Medicare) who sent him for a CT scan (paid for by the Australian Government's Medicare. The CT scan identified a brain tumour that was impacting on his optic nerve. The Opthamologist then referred my brother to a Children's Hospital in Sydney where he was admitted and, had an MRI and was assigned a Neurologist (all paid for by the Australian Government's Medicare).

My brother spent two weeks in hospital, required surgery, required several MRI's and CT Scans, required three days of intensive care, six weeks of Radiotherapy and was assessed by Occupational Therapists, Neurologists, Social Workers, Radiotherapists,Pathologists and Opthamologists. Furthermore he recieves MRI check ups every six months as well as consultations with Neurologists and Encrinologists. The total cost of my brother's care to us was $0.

Opponents of universal government run health care always mention it's inefficency, it's cost, supposed waiting lists and government control. For those who feel this way I warn you never to make these statements to my younger brother who is now training to be a Registered Nurse and become part of a system that looks more towards helping everybody rather than those with the cash to pay for it.

I don't care which state gets there first and will root for all of these efforts. Thanks to all the activists pushing this change forward.
Together we will get there.
What a great article to read at the end of day.

Unfortunately, ED, waiting for the federal government to enact single-payer could take decades longer. Aren't you aware that the Supreme Court of the United States has been asked to hear the pro's and con's of the HealthCare Act that was passed a few years back under Pres Obama? The republicans are trying to get rid of the only progress made in years. I wanted national single-payer years ago. But, it will not happen on a national level in this country. Thanks to the greedy, deadly insurance companies. By individual states doing it, they can prove that it will work. Once they get enuf states to enact it, then it will become so expected that the states that haven't enacted yet will be pressured more and more to come on board. Vermont has already done it. We are next because we are a relatively progressive state and hopefully we can crush the likes of BlueCross Blue Shield who have a strong-hold here. Notice that the anti-ObamaCare ads on TV right now are sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. In New York, your local Chamber of Commerce is more than happy to sell you a nice expensive BlueCross Blue Shield Health Insurance Policy. At least in St Lawrence County. I think that constitues a nice conflict of interest. I am really surprised it's even legal. So, yea, I agree. Medicare for all. But, it's already been shown that even some Democrats in Congress haven't been supportive of national healthcare. We just won't be able to get it on a national level, at least at the current time.
Thank you Senatore Duane for sponsoring this awesome bill!!!!!
