"I haven't spoken to a person in the United States in at least three years who doesn't have a healthcare horror story. The system has become so bad that virtually everyone has been touched by a:

  • job loss;
  • bankruptcy;
  • union contract that requires a much larger personal commitment;
  • a disastrous delay or waiting period;
  • a denial by an insurance company;
  • an inability to pay for needed prescription drugs;
  • an intervention by the FDA to keep people from getting cheaper prescription drugs from Canada;
  • a doctor who has decided to stop practicing rather than being told what to do by insurance companies and HMO's;
  • an untimely death resulting from a medical mistake or cutbacks in medical and nursing personnel;
  • a decision to "cut the pills in half" in order to pay for food and rent;
  • restrictions on medically necessary equipment for people with disabilities;
  • a denial of mental health care because the payments cover only 50% of costs or there is a delay in getting treatment for four or five months;
  • fraud on the part of various healthcare providers with little oversight.

And these are just a few of the thousands of stories..." (Marilyn Clement)

People want to tell their stories to someone who can help!

How Can We Help Them Do It?

  1. The Citizen/Congressional Hearings offer one opportunity. Help people get to the hearings to tell their stories. Be sure they are being recorded and video-taped.
  2. Help them write their testimony so we can get it into the Congressional Record.
  3. Help them sign our petition and write their story on the website. Many thousands of people will see it there. Link to Petition.
  4. Help people by practicing their story in advance of testifying so it is coherent and brief.
  5. Help them write their member of Congress telling their story and asking them to sign onto H.R. 676.
