Dec. 10 – Rally to Stop the “Grand Bargain”

As you know, President Obama is seeking a “grand bargain” to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” coming at the end of the year. We already know that President Obama is willing to raise Medicare’s eligibility age from 65 to 67 and cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security by $650 billion.

We need to stop any cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. And we know improved Medicare-for-all is the solution.

So we’re asking all of Healthcare-NOW!’s activists and members to take this message to the streets on or around International Human Rights Day on Monday, December 10, 2012.

Can you organize a rally, demonstration, or lobby visit to your Representative or Senators’ offices that day or week?

The “grand bargain” violates our human rights as outlined in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”

This is our message. We must preserve and protect our social insurance programs! Losing them means real human suffering and preventable death.

If you can organize an event, please let us know. We’ll post it on our site and send it to our list of supporters in your area. We can send you signs, petitions, and lobby materials if you need them. If you can’t organize or attend an action, please donate to Healthcare-NOW! so we can send materials to groups around the country.

Some of our allies are organizing events in early December as well. We’ll send along more information as it comes to us. We’ll also send you some downloadable materials for your rally or lobby day soon. But in the meantime, please let us know if you can plan something so that we can spread the word.

We know this is short notice, but politicians are hoping we’re too exhausted after the elections to ramp up activity in defense of our social insurance programs. We can stop these cuts and get single-payer healthcare into the discussion, but we have to act soon. Help us organize dozens of actions all over the country.

Again, let us know if you are planning a public event. You can contact us by calling the office at 800-453-1305 or emailing us at info@healthcare-now.org.
