Here’s some GOOD NEWS – The Fair Elections Now Act, the bill providing for publicly funded elections for Congress, has passed in committee and has moved to the floor of the House of Representatives.
This bill gives members of Congress an alternative to being dependent on campaign cash from lobbyists and it gives any citizen the ability to challenge an incumbent by allowing them to run a financially competitive campaign using small donations (under $100) matched by public funding.
In our struggle for improved and expanded Medicare for All, we have witnessed the enormous power that for-profit health-related industries have over our Congress. The Fair Elections Now Act gives members of Congress the financial freedom to disregard the threats and enticements of industry lobbyists. Because candidates’ campaigns will be financed by small contributions from people in their home state, Congress will be listening to us, instead of the lobbyists.
And what are we saying? We’re saying that we want single-payer, the only morally and fiscally responsible solution for our continuing healthcare crisis.
You can help, right now, to pass this bill!
And call Speaker Pelosi (202-225-4965) and ask her to schedule a vote on the Fair Elections Now Act (HR 6116/1826) before Congress adjourns.
Thanks to Frank Kirkwood from the Western PA Coalition for Single-Payer Healthcare for sending this action idea to us.
