Single Payer just makes sense its the easiest thing to do. If the House Dems are worried about re-election, how are they going to get booted out of office by enacting Single Payer? They'll be lifers in the House are you kidding me?

I think what will happen is that the Public Option supporters will band together with the Single Payers and push Single Payer through and challenge the Senate to crush it. If the Senate crushes it, well they won't be office much longer, many will call for this heads.

But I think even the Bluedogs will be shamed into voting for it. They aren't that Conservative or ARE THEY?

We shall see

Even if all of Medicaid and SCHIP populations were instantly shifted to the PO, what about all the Medicaid HMOs and those private insurers that cover SCHIP kids? Would Medicaid HMO's just go away? That, of course, may be a good thing, as we have had ongoing battles with Medicaid HMOs over enrollment, disenrollment, continuity of care, benefit coverage, etc--just like any other private insurer! And of course the whole issue that Medicaid programs, unlike Medicare, are run by individual states, state-financed, etc, so you'll have 50+ state legislatures to be happy/upset about this aspect of "public option". But all in all, you are correct--I have not heard 1 word out of the Obama folks about how to get people into the PO in mass numbers. And I love to see the use of the Latin phrase "tabula rasa"!

Do those who support the public option believe it is the first step in getting a single payer and that we must get there incrementally? Because if we want to do incremental reform it should be a phased in as part of a single payer plan. Phase 1: Start with prenatal to age 25 (or so) and put them into the current Medicare system and lower the age of Medicare eligibility. That way the healthiest of us are balancing out the sickest of us. It's also more like taxes for public education because it concentrates on children - that we need as a society to become healthy, productive adults to take care of us in our own old age; Then phase in other groups until everyone is in and nobody out. But to try an incremental approach that isn't even single payer is a deadend. Of course, I would prefer we just go for broke with single payer for all.
